2018 HSA Contribution Deadline April 15th For Most; Extended For Some

(December 19, 2018) The deadline for making HSA contributions is the individual’s tax-filing deadline for the year, which is usually April 15th. The HSA contribution deadline does not include any tax filing extensions. As a result, most HSA owners have until Monday, April 15, 2019, to make HSA contributions for 2018. However, due to the observance of Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day, residents of Maine and Massachusetts have until Wednesday, April 17, 2019 to make their 2018 HSA contributions.

By law, filing and payment deadlines (including the deadline for making HSA contributions) that fall on a Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday are timely satisfied if met on the next business day. Legal holiday includes a legal holiday observed in the District of Columbia. With Patriot’s Day, a legal holiday in the states of Maine and Massachusetts, observed on April 15th, and then Emancipation Day (a legal holiday observed in the District of Columbia) on April 16th, taxpayers who live in Maine and Massachusetts have until Wednesday, April 17, 2019 to make HSA contributions for tax year 2018.
